“Yeah. I don’t know who tries my patience more, Childress or that Lizzie French. You know I ran into her a little while ago. She was talking to some of the other members from the Historical Society about drafting some kind of proclamation on morality or some such nonsense and bringing it before the townspeople. Says she’s tired of so much “loose morality and heathenism” in the country and that Trinity’s Land End should try to set an example to the world. The heathenism part I think she said explicitly for my effect. Anyway, we just looked at each other like she was from Venus and I was from Mars and that was that. I swear that woman will not be satisfied until the “Republic of Gilead” is finally established, and we can do away with the Constitution and be ruled by Old Testament religious dogma. I’m sure of it.”
He chuckled.
“There’s a reference in there to something literary and profound but I’m afraid I have no idea.”
“Oh never mind me Detective, it’s just something out of a wonderful but frightening little book calledThe Handmaid’s Tale. It was one of the books Lizzie tried to have banned from the library last year and it happens to be my oldest girl’s favorite.”
“Banning books, now there’s a past time. I wonder what kind of far-reaching benefit does she imagine the adoption of her pointless proclamation would have? She can’t seriously believe the state legislature would give it any credence. Does she really believe the American government should be run in the fear of God, like a theocracy?” “Detective Litani, surely you’re not asking for me to explain logic when it comes to Lizzie French, are you?”

“What just Happened? ” brief bullet points for previous Chapter 1 overview: THE BODY
A naked mutilated body is discovered in a field in the small town of Trinity’s Land End. It is later revealed to be the identity of Patty Lowell. The townsfolk all know Patty Lowell to have been a wayward young girl born to a Gypsy mother and an unknown Caucasian father.
Detective Litani, the investigator at the scene of the crime is a Baltimore transplant who happens to be in town under dubious circumstances. Due to political shenanigans outside of his control he is now stationed in the Sheriff’s department under the new “Special Section’s Unit”. We learn briefly that this unusual assignment has not endeared him with the town’s Sheriff.
With the medical examiner absent from the crime scene, Detective Litani struggles to preserve the crime scene and stave off a bevy of questions from some of the town’s citizens who have surrounded the body.
Back at the Sheriff’s department Detective Litani peruses through some of the criminal files and discovers an entire section devoted to some of the Gypsy caravans that have come through town during past summers. One of the files, or rap sheet, is devoted to a Gypsy woman named Moravia Lowell and Detective Litani finds a picture in which the woman appears to be pregnant.
Shortly afterwards, Detective Litani shows up at the town’s orphanage, the murdered victim Patty’s Lowell’s childhood residence. There he meets the caretaker of the orphanage, Rebecca Jamison, who had a special friendship with Patty Lowell when they were children while her mother ran the orphanage over ten years ago. He questions Rebecca about Patty Lowell’s reappearance in Trinity’s Land End months ago prior to death. Most importantly, he presents her with the picture of the Gypsy woman from the police files that he believes to be Patty Lowell’s mother but is unable to get her to confirm his suspicions. What he does learn is that Patty Lowell ran away from the orphanage at sixteen years old and he sees this incident from her childhood as possibly the first clue into the investigation of her murder.
